The children have worked really hard this week. Their amazing attitude towards their learning always makes teaching them so enjoyable.
We have continued with our story 'Handa's Surprise this week. We have been recapping on 'expanded noun phrases' and making sure that we use them in our descriptions of Akeyo's Village.
In maths we have been working on solving reasoning problems. We have been focusing on time. Children in this digital age do find this skill quite tricky so any work at home would be much appreciated.
In science we have continued our work on 'The Body'. The children have been naming body parts and thinking about how they work.
On Thursday we had a great time creating our own sculptures using old boxes. We took our inspiration from Barbara Hepworth. She is most famous for her abstract sculptures of people. The children worked in groups to create their own abstract person. We put them together to make our own 'Family Sculpture'.
Have a wonderful weekend.

A shorter week this week due to the Bank Holiday Monday but another very busy one.
This week we started out new topic 'African Adventure'. The children worked in pairs to create a mind map of things that they already know about this vast continent. It was a good starting point to talk about what they knew and sort out some misconceptions too. We also looked at some maps of the World and Africa. We reminded ourselves of the continents of the World and what a continent is.
In English we started our new story,'Handa's Surprise', a traditional story set in Kenya. The children have continued to write poems but this week linked to our book. They have written some creative pieces selecting adjectives carefully to create expanded noun phrases.
In maths we have been recapping measuring length and height and comparing measurements. We have also continued to work on solving reasoning problems, reading problems carefully to decide on the correct operation to use. Lots of children 'had a go' at their next times tables on Thursday so hopefully we will have some certificates and badges to hand out next week, once I have marked them all. Your help at home to work on these times tables is much appreciated.
In PE we have been practising our skipping in preparation of the Skipping Festival (you should have received a letter about this on Thursday with more details). The children's skipping skills are really improving and they have all shown great determination.
We also saw the start of the Key Stage 1 Multi-Sports Club on Thursday after school. The children all enjoyed their session!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Another very busy week in Cherry Tree Class.
We have continued our work on poetry this week. The children are really enjoying this unit of writing. They have written some lovely poems titled, 'If you're not from Yeadon'.
In maths we have continued to work on solving problems involving all 4 operations. The children have been thinking about the maths vocabulary that will help them to decide which operations to use.
In Art this half term we are looking at sculptors. This week we have looked at the work of Michelle Reader. The children enjoyed creating their own monsters using a variety of re-used materials.
On Tuesday we had a visit from Harold the Giraffe. He came to talk to us about 'Feelings'. The children listened really well and talked very clearly about different feelings they might have and how to manage them. They really enjoyed meeting Harold!
All the children were given a letter yesterday about an after-school multi-sports club that will be starting soon. Please make sure that your child returns this by the date given if they are interested in taking part in this club.
Enjoy your longer bank holiday weekend. Let's hope the weather warms up a little.
