Hello everyone,
This week, we completed our unit of work on position and direction in maths. The children have been learning how to describe position using coordinates, plot coordinates on a grid using the x and y axis, drawing 2-D shapes on a grid and translating on a grid. The children have done extremely well with this short unit of work in maths and made great progress.
In our reading, the children really enjoyed a task where they came up with alternative titles for each chapter of Stig of the Dump. There were some very creative ideas which still worked perfectly with the events of each chapter. The children also reviewed the book, wrote a small summary and what their favourite part of the book was. They then drew their favourite scene and gave the book a rating out of 10.
For writing, the children’s final big piece of writing this year will be an instruction text. They have looked at a WAGOLL instruction text and identified all the features required. This focused on how to make a Stone Age fire. The children have then been watching videos and doing online research about how to make Stone Age clothing. They noted down all their ideas down about what resources would be required and the necessary steps. Finally, they wrote their first draft of their instruction text.
The children have been growing red sunflowers over the last 5 weeks, which have been growing extremely well, and the children have loved looking after them and watching them grow. This week, it was finally time for the children to take them home and continue to look after them.
In art, over the last two weeks, the children have been creating their fruit plushies. They have used the sewing skills that they have learnt to stitch together and stuff the fruit that they chose to work on. This was a challenging task for the children, but they learnt the skills very quickly, and with a lot of determination, focus and resilience, they created some beautiful pieces that they should be very proud of. Well done!
Take care,
Mr Kyriacou

Hello everyone,
This week, in our writing, the children have been learning all about limericks, reading a range of them, analysing the features of them and planning their own.
In our reading, we have complete Stig of the Dump, which has been our class novel over the summer term. The children really enjoyed the book and the ending of it created a really enjoyable discussion amongst the class.
In maths, we have been focusing on statistics. The children have been reading and analysing data from pictograms, line graphs and bar charts. They have also collected their own data and recorded it using a bar chart. The children then created a range of questions that they could ask based on the data and got their partners to work out the answers.
In history, we have gone beyond the Bronze Age and into the Iron Age. The children have been researching into how things like weapons, tools and homes continued to change throughout this age with the introduction of iron and what the advantages of using iron were instead of using Bronze.
In science, the children concluded their egg shell enamel experiment to see what the effect of different liquids would be on the shell which acts as the tooth enamel. They were very pleased to see that their predictions were correct with vinegar causing the most damage to the enamel and we discussed in detail as to why that was the case and recorded our findings.
Take care,’
Mr Kyriacou

Hello everyone,
This week, in our writing, the children have completed their drafts of their non-chronological reports based on the Stone Age and have used purple pens to edit them. They’ve done a great job with them and it ‘s fantastic to see all that historical knowledge being used within their writing. They will publish these next week.
In our reading, the children have voted on a new story time book and have gone for Dead Man's Cove by Lauren St John. This is the prequel to Kidnap in the Caribbean, which was a class novel that we read earlier in the year. Because they enjoyed that so much, they wanted to read the first book of the series and are already enjoying the first few chapters of it.
In maths, we completed our unit of work on shape, finishing off with work on regular and irregular polygons and symmetry. The children have worked really hard on this unit have really enjoyed it.
In computing, we have continued our work on database branching and the children created their own digitally branched databases based on a variety of things using closed questions to separate the different items that they had. They really enjoyed doing this!
For our art unit, the children have started working on creating their fruit and vegetable plushies, which require them to draw the shape of the fruit or vegetable of their choice, cut it out accurately and to sew and stuff it to a fabric background. Although the sewing part was challenging for some children, they showed great resilience and did not give up.
Take care,
Mr Kyriacou
