Physical Education

At Rufford Park Primary School, we…

Intent

We aim to:

  • Engage pupils in regular physical activity and promote life-long physical activity through a quality PE and Extra Curricular offer.
  • Give all pupils the opportunity to try new activities and be competitive both as individuals and teams.
  • Teach the importance of physical activity through our lessons, reviewing performance, effectiveness and ideas through sport and physical activity.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is supported by The PE Hub, an online platform that provides high-quality lesson plans, resources and assessment tools for primary PE. We have adapted this to our 1.5 form entry to school to ensure that our curriculum progresses each year, with no chance of repetition within Key Stages (see progression map below). Alongside this we have children accessing weekly swimming, and Year groups 1-4 also partake in a bespoke skipping unit piloted by us with ‘The Skipping School’. We feel the range of skills and sports we offer gives all our pupils chance to discover something they love and pursue that in and out of school.

As seen on our PE Spending Report, we use Sam Shaw from EVO Sports Coaching to team teach alongside our class teachers to deliver 50% of the curriculum over the year. We use this as CPD for our teachers to help with specialist subject knowledge within a range of sports, whilst also providing consistent class management from the class teacher. We also employ Sam for physically active lunchtime, and after school sports clubs.

Impact

Throughout the teaching of our curriculum, teachers, coaches and pupils assess learning throughout the year. This could be Teacher to Pupil feedback, Peer to Peer feedback or Self Analysis. At two points during any given unit (each half term) teachers will assess against a range of objectives relating to the Heart, Head and Hand principles below. Teachers and Coaches constantly assess throughout PE lessons to ensure pupils get regular feedback on their performance to allow them to improve.
