Well done to these pupils especially!

EMO tunes have been the music theme for this week and Avril Lavigne’s classic hit, Sk8er Boi, was by far the most popular. Tune!
In English, the children are continuing to learn about newspapers and are constructing the two sides of an argument about deforestation in rainforests. It has been incredible how involved the children have become on the theme of palm oil. I gather some of you have even bought chocolate spread with NO palm oil in for Pancake Day – that is dedication. Thank you!
In Maths, we continue to learn even more about decimals numbers, especially with how they link with key fractions we know. This is knowledge for life – so please do quiz your child on the decimals for ½, ¼, 1/10, 1/5 and ¾.
World Book Day was fun again this year! I was really impressed with the variety of animal costumes created! We all took part in another BBC Live Lesson – and we took the opportunity to talk about favourite books we have. Please look at our pictures on the school Facebook page.
Bugsy rehearsals and prop making sessions continue – not long to go now! So please do encourage your child to learn their words (if they have not already done so). Tickets will soon be on sale, I am assured!
Homework is Maths, Grammar and Spellings – as always, due in on Wednesday. Next week is assessment week for Oak Tree Class, so now would be a good weekend to refresh times tables and other basic number skills (x by 10, 100, 1000 etc Number Bonds to 100, square and cube numbers)
I hope you have a super weekend.
Yours,
Mrs Adrienne Amos

Well done to these children!
Welcome back to school for Spring Term 2! K-Pop has greeted the children every day – from BTS to 2NE1…(every day is a school day!).
This week has been super busy. We have started back on decimals, including recognising tenths and thousandths and we are continuing to look at examples of balanced arguments. We shall be writing these over the next couple of weeks.
In other news, Bugsy Malone rehearsals continue and we are all enjoying putting together the scenes, dances and songs, as well as designing and making the scenery for our production. Hopefully, costumes are being collected together by family and friends - please do contact me if there is an issue regarding the clothing your child needs. Email me, as usual, at oak@ruffordparkprimary.org.uk
I hope you have a lovely weekend,
Yours,
Mrs Amos

Well done to these children this week!
Attendance raffle winner: Whole Class!
Our attendance in Oak Tree Class is not always in the 90 %s, so it is encouraging that the children have been determined to achieve a 'treat' at the end of this week for improved attendance. I really hope this continues next half term, as we cover a lot of important units in our work, preparing the children for Y6, along with, of course, much work on Bugsy Malone!
This week has been Internet Safety Week – and here is a link for you to follow and hopefully help to start a conversation with your children about this very important subject.

We often spend time in discussion about how important it is that we keep ourselves as safe online, as we do irl (in real life!) and this week the children also learned more about how to recognise phishing and scams. Oak Tree Class took part in an online Live Lesson, courtesy of the BBC and it was exciting knowing that we were learning alongside thousands of other school children on Safer Internet Day.
Please see the following leaflet for more safety information about one of the most popular online games for our Y5 children: Roblox.
In maths, we have been continuing with fractions work, as well as working hard to improve arithmetic skills. If you know your child finds one area of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, please do try to spend some time this half-term encouraging them to practise. There is no homework, with it being half term, apart from Reading, of course.
Have a great half term,
Mrs Amos

Well done to these children this week!

Rap and Hip Hop have greeted the children each morning – don’t worry though, I have vetted each and every song to ensure a ‘clean’ version has been played!
Maths has been finding fractions of quantities, which links very closely to previous work completed on division. After half term, we are also introducing an Arithmetic Test each fortnight in Y5. This is in a bid to prepare the children well for their prospective work in Y6; any help you can give your child in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions would be very helpful. Each child has the aim to improve the score (even by one mark!) each week.
On Tuesday, the children had a workshop session delivered to them by the Mental Health Team all about Resilience. They were extremely responsive and gave some super answers – I know the Mental Health team greatly enjoyed our session!
We have continued improving our Handball skills in PE. And we have spent a lot of time learning about the fabulous flora and fauna of the Amazon Rainforest, too. A very busy week!
Letters about costumes for Bugsy (and all the song words) will be sent home next week. Homework is Maths, Grammar and Spelling practice.
Have a lovely weekend.
Yours,
Mrs Adrienne Amos

Still it’s January!! Another busy busy week in Oak Tree Class, but we really seem to be motoring through the Y5 curriculum and I’m seeing some great progress!
Our music genre this week has been Disco – and even though YMCA probably received the largest response, the Bee Gees ‘Stayin’ Alive’ had lots of heads bopping to the beat!
We have finally completed our rainforest poems and each child has produced a fantastic published version. We hope to display all of these soon.
Methods for short division have dominated in maths this week. Homework this week reflects this learning – please do support your child in these questions and encourage them to show all their working out. Spellings and Grammar homework, too.
We have continued learning the skills for Handball in PE and next week, there is hopefully going to be an intra-school Handball competition, which is very exciting! [Pray for good weather!!]
On Monday, as it was Holocaust Memorial Day across the world, we commemorated it in Oak Tree Class by learning a little about what ‘Holocaust’ means and how it related to our topic last term on WW2. The children then spent time considering the theme for this year: For a better Future. After creating a card butterfly, they all added key areas they though the world could do to create a better future. Some of their ideas were quite poignant: to end racism; for more to stand up for injustice; to take greater care of our planet; to learn from mistakes made in the past.
All of these butterflies will be displayed in our corridor.
Bugsy Malone rehearsals have really started to take off now! I hope the children are spending time learning their lines – all need to be memorised by the first week of next half term.
I hope you all enjoy your weekends – do remember that next Friday (14 Feb) is a Training Day at RPPS.
Yours,
Mrs Adrienne Amos
