Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog

Hello!

It has been a short and very quick week in Lime Tree.

In English we have started our new focus text 'Lila and the Secret of Rain'. The children have been writing predictions about the setting based of pictures from the book and writing thought bubbles as the villagers who are facing a drought.

In PSHE we discussed the importance of good tooth health and why it is so important to look after our teeth. The children all took home a complimentary toothbrush and tooth paste from Colgate. There is also an educational leaflet for you to read together.

In Maths Year 1 have been solving addition and subtraction problems using a bar model. Year 2 have been solving lots of different reasoning problems using all four operations.

Have a lovely weekend in the sunshine.

Hello!

It has been a lovely week in Lime Tree with even some sunshine to enjoy :)

In Maths we have finished our unit on money. Both Year 1 and 2 have continued to work on the value of coins and notes. They have also been counting in coins and solving addition with money to buy items.

In English we have finished our final week on 'Handa's Surprise'. The children tasted some of the different fruits from the story and created a word bank to describe the taste, smell and texture of the fruit. We then used the adjectives to write a list poem about the fruit.
For our third lesson in our 'Let's Sculpt' Art topic we learnt about the sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The children worked in groups to create their own human sculpture which then made an abstract family inspired by Barbara Hepworth's work.

In our Topic lesson we recapped on what the equator is and learnt about the continent Africa. The children were amazed to learn that there are 54 countries in Africa and there are over 1000 different languages spoken there.

Have a lovely (long) weekend!

Weekly Update 26.04.24

Hello,

We have had very busy week with lots of different things on our timetable!

On Monday Year 2 had their road safety workshop. The children learnt about the Green Cross Code and put it into practice by going outside and crossing the road in pairs.

On Wednesday we had our African Drumming Workshop. We learnt a bit of history about where the drum came from and why they were used. We learnt how to hold the drums correctly and how to make different sounds by hitting the drums with our hands. We sang an African song and played the drums in two groups to create two different sound patterns. Drumming Solo!

In Art our lesson was all about Michelle Reader and how she makes sculptures out of recycled materials. We made our own Creative Monsters using card.

Have a lovely weekend.

Hello!

We have had a fantastic first week back. All the children have returned to school with big smiles and a positive attitude to learning!

In English we have introduced our new focus text 'Handa's Surprise' and the children wrote a setting description of Handa's village. Here is an animated version of the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocnRQi89nK8

In Maths Year 1 have spent the week recapping addition, subtraction and halving. Year 2 have been recapping halving and quartering. They have also been introduced to recognising and finding a third.

In Geography the children worked in teams to label a World Map with all seven continents and five oceans. To help us remember the names of the continents and oceans we have been listening to the following two songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6BE4VcYngQ

In Science we have introduced our new focus which is all about animals and their needs for survival. Our first lesson was all about Mammals.

In Art each week we will be learning about different sculptors. For our first lesson we learnt about Marc Quinn and we were inspired to recreate a sculpture that Quinn created of his hand. Every child made their own hand sculpture using air drying clay. You will be able to see some of these through our classroom window!

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 28.03.24

Hello!

We have had a really nice final week in Lime Tree :)

Last week the children created Stick Man information posters all about Yeadon. The children got to share these with the children in Cherry Tree. We also did the same activity with our DT moving pictures. The children were able to evaluate each others work by saying what they liked about the pictures.

In Science we reviewed our 'Keeping Plants Healthy' experiment and found that the plant which we had predicted to survive the best did and it was the one on the windowsill with light and water.

In Maths we finished our position and direction work by going outside and completing a challenge in pairs which was all about turns.

Over this half term we have been learning the poem 'Here is the Seed' by John Foster. This is a video of the Poem With Actions

Today we have made some lovely Easter cards and the children have taken part in the Egg Scramble!

I hope you all have a lovely break and I look forward to welcoming you back on Monday 15th April.
